According to the Report on Education Strengthening prepared by the Palestinian National Authority (Land Administration Project) and to the personal conversation held with Dr. Faisal Awadallah (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Birzeit University) in Munich on May 8th 2008, it has been found that additional institutional and human resources development are required in Palestine in order to support reforms in the government and the private sector in the context of land administration; in particular, in terms of formal education and training.
TUM’s Chair of Land Management, has been selected among other universities from various countries to participate in a cooperation programme with the Palestinian National Authority and Birzeit University and, therefore, for joining Phase 2 of the Land Administration Project (financed by World Bank). The role of the Chair of Land Management is to assist Birzeit University in the development and implementation of a Master's Programme in Land Management and Land Administration.
The Chair of Land Management is committed to the transfer of knowledge, at all academic and administrative levels, as a way of contributing directly and effectively to the attainment of sustainable development and the achievement of the UN-Millennium Development Goals. In this sense, it is a great honour to be part of such an initiative.
As first activity in the context of this cooperation, Prof. Dr. Holger Magel and Dipl.-Ing. MSc Jorge Espinoza took part in a Workshop organized by the Birzeit University from October 25th to 27th 2008. The objective of the Workshop was to develop the structure of the curriculum of Birzeit's new master's programme in close collaboration with the university and the Palestinian Ministry of Planning.
