Land is a very
valuable
and scarce resource. People need land to grow food, to build cities,
for
investments as well as for housing. Therefore, access to land, rights
over
land, the management and administration of land as well as the settling
of land conflicts are very important for human kind. Many international
conventions and declarations underline the importance of land rights
and
land management to achieve sustainable rural and urban
development.
The Master’s
Program ”Land
Management and Land Tenure“ provides the necessary theoretical and
practical
background for future experts in this field. Courses include topics
such
as land policy, land tenure systems, rural and urban development, land
management, land administration, cadastre, land use planning,
photogrammetry,
remote sensing, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Global
Positioning
Systems (GPS) and land conflict management. In addition, courses on
project
management, presentation, mediation, intercultural communication etc.
are
offered. Mid-career students from all over the world are taking part in
the program.

The Master’s
Program aims
to qualify students in interdisciplinary approaches to land management
and land tenure in an international context. One aim is to place the
role
of land tenure and land management in the broader context of good
governance
and sustainable development. Another objective is to provide students
with
a profound knowledge of the many aspects of land tenure and land
management
in the rural as well as in the urban context. All courses combine
theory
and practice. Students are trained in the application of practical
methods
and tools. Case studies, field trips and lectures given by experts with
practical international experience complete the formation.
The courses focus
on:
- the political, social and economic dimension of land tenure and land
management (land
policy, land tenure systems and access to natural resources in
industrialised
countries, developing countries and countries in transition),
- the various fields of application, such as land administration, land
readjustment
and land conflict resolution,
- methods
and tools for sustainable land management which include among
others
participatory planning approaches, cartography, GIS, remote sensing, as
well as training in moderation, mediation and presentation.
The Master’s Program
lasts three semesters; two semesters of classes at Technische
Universität
München and one semester consisting of field work and the
preparation
of a Master’s thesis. Master’s theses focussing on practical issues in
the students’ home countries are most welcome.
