International Conference |
| Time frame: | 17th - 18th of April 2008 |
| Venue: | Munich, Conference Centre of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (Hanns Seidel Stiftung) |
| Direction: | Prof. Dr. Holger Magel and Prof. Dr. Gottfried Konecny |
| Conference language: | English |
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) represent a set of unprecedented efforts which countries around the globe and the leading development institutions have undertaken in order to meet the needs of the world’s poorest people. These efforts have brought together a considerable number of professionals of different fields and from all over the world, who have committed themselves to contributing to the development of a more equitable world. Clearly, there has been progress towards the achievement of these goals, but, halfway to the 2015 deadline, the overall success is still far from satisfactory and many targets still need more consideration and stronger efforts. The International Conference "Policy meets Land Management: Contributions to the Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals" was organized as a joint venture of four main partners, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), the Chair of Land Management of the Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Beratungsgruppe für Internationale Entwicklung im Vermessungswesen (BEV), with the valuable support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSS), the Deutscher Verein für Vermessungswesen e.V. (DVW) and the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG). The conference took place on April 17th and 18th 2008 at the Conference Centre of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Munich and was visited by more than 160 participants from around 30 countries from all over the world. The main objectives of the conference were to reflect on the German contribution to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, particularly on those goals which are closer to the wider field of Land Management and, in this context, to discuss about their state of affairs and what path should be followed in the future if the goals are to be truly achieved. Consequently, the conference also aimed at bringing Land Management to the centre of the current global discussions as a key issue for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and, hence, for reducing poverty and delivering equity around the world. The most important results of the conference are summarized in the Wrap-up Speech given by Prof. Dr. Holger Magel and by the Munich Declaration on Land Management and Land Policy 2008 which was agreed upon by all the participants at the end of the congress. During the conference, there were a number of keynote speakers and presentations, all which are contained in this documentation CD.
